Cockroaches are nocturnal insects that spend most of their time in hidden harborage sites — behind refrigerators, inside cabinets, under sinks, within wall voids, and inside electrical equipment. A cockroach seen during daylight hours indicates harborage sites are overcrowded.
The two species our Yakutat technicians treat most frequently are the German cockroach and the American cockroach — each requiring a different approach. German cockroaches live and breed entirely indoors, reproduce at high rates, and are prone to developing resistance when repeatedly exposed to the same insecticide. Species identification is the essential first step.

Health Risks
- Bacterial Contamination: Cockroaches harbour and mechanically transfer bacteria — including Salmonella, E. coli, and Staphylococcus — across food preparation surfaces, utensils, and stored food. A single foraging cockroach can contaminate surfaces it crosses.
- Allergen & Asthma Risk: Cockroach droppings, cast skins, and dried saliva particles are established respiratory allergens. In enclosed living spaces, accumulation of these particles is associated with increased asthma frequency and severity — particularly in children and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions.
